Questions about wool?

Can't find what you're looking for? Visit our FAQs or reach out — we're real people who love the sauna.

What is Saunamekko made from?

100% merino wool fabric. Breathable, temperature-regulating, and naturally antimicrobial — everything the sauna demands, nothing it doesn't.

Why is merino wool such a great option for the sauna?

Merino is a lightweight natural fiber that thrives in heat and humidity. It regulates body temperature, manages moisture so your body can sweat naturally, and resists odor without chemical treatments. Wool has been worn in Nordic sauna culture for centuries — it simply belongs there.

Is wool safe to wear in the sauna?

Completely. Merino regulates temperature and moves moisture away from the body, keeping you comfortable even in intense heat.

Can merino wool be worn in water?

Yes — and it works beautifully as part of a sauna and cold plunge ritual. In cold water it takes the edge off the initial shock, and afterward it helps you warm back up gradually. Not designed for lap swimming, but ideal for everything the sauna ritual involves.

Does merino wool itch?

No. Merino fibers are far finer than traditional wool, making it soft enough to wear directly against skin.

Will it make me too hot?

The opposite, actually. Merino is thermoregulating — rather than trapping heat, it helps your body release it. Most people are surprised by how comfortable it feels compared to anything else they've worn in the sauna.

How often should I wash it?

Less often than you'd think. Merino naturally resists odor and bacteria, so it doesn't need washing after every use. After the sauna, hang it to air out — most people find they only need to wash it every few weeks. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry when it's time.

What's the issue with wearing synthetic swimwear in the sauna?

Most swimwear is made from plastic-based synthetics like polyester — forms of plastic that release microplastics in high heat, trap sweat against the skin, and become genuinely uncomfortable. The sauna opens your pores and increases circulation — it's exactly the wrong time to be wearing plastic. (Swimsuits, we're looking at you.)
